Frequently Asked Questions About the Issuance of an Emergency Travel Document

This service facilitates the issuance of an emergency travel document to Rwandans or Rwandan residents living abroad, foreigners in Rwanda, or their children born in Rwanda who have lost their travel documents and need to travel back home. 

The service is provided by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) office.

Applicants with or without an Irembo account can apply for this service

  1. Who can apply for this service?

Rwandans or Rwandan residents living abroad, foreigners in Rwanda, or their children born in Rwanda who have lost their travel documents.

  1. How much do I pay for this service?

The service is free of charge.


  1. How long does it take to process the application?

The processing time is 1 day.

  1. What documents are required to apply?

You may need identification details such as a national ID number, a foreign ID, a passport number, or a child application number, depending on your situation.

  1. What supporting documents may be required?

Optional attachments include proof of residence, proof of citizenship, a passport photo, a police loss report, proof of voluntary repatriation, or other supporting documents.


  1. I am trying to apply for an emergency travel document, but when I upload a photo, I keep getting a message saying it does not meet the required format. How can you help me?
