FAQs about foreigner identification card

This service allows foreigners residing in Rwanda to apply for a foreigner Identification card to use in Rwanda. The residence permit must be valid for not less than six (6) months. The service is provided by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) office. 


The following are the most frequently asked questions about foreigner identification card; 

  1. How much do I pay for a foreign identification card?

The service costs Rwf 5000.

You can apply for this service with or without an Irembo account.

  1. What is the processing time for a foreign ID?

The processing time is 7 days. 

  1. What are the requirements needed to apply for a foreign ID? 

The applicant should have a valid passport and the residence permit must be valid for not less than six (6) months

  1. What is the validity of the foreign identification card?

It depends on the validity of the residence permit.

  1. Who is eligible to apply for a foreign ID?

A foreigner who has been residing in Rwanda for not less than 6 months

  1. Where do I get my ID once is it produced? 

Once it is produced, the applicant visits the DGIE office to receive their ID.
