How to Apply for an E-passport Replacement

Do you have an upcoming trip, and your passport is lost, damaged, stolen, or expired? Quickly apply for an e-passport replacement on www.irembo.gov.rw and receive it on time. 


The service is provided by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE).

IMPORTANT: Note that you should NOT submit an e-Passport replacement application if you are replacing the discontinued passport issued by DGIE before 28 June 2019. If you are replacing this type of passport, you need to apply through the service “e-Passport First Application.”.

  1. What are the requirements to apply for e-Passport replacement?

  • The replacement fee depends on the e-passport category, with an additional penalty of 50% of the fee if the replacement is for reasons other than expiry.

  • Required attachments vary by passport type, validity, and applicant's age, as outlined in the tables below.

  • For replacements due to theft, you will be requested to provide a Declaration of Loss from RIB.

2. Steps to apply for an e-passport replacement

1. Visit www.irembo.gov.rw and under Immigration and Emigration, click on the e-Passport Application. 

2.  Select which request type you want, e-Passport replacement, and click Apply.

3. Choose who needs this service; whether the applicant is above 18 or below 18, and fill in the Applicant Details. 

  • If an applicant is above 18, he/she enters their national ID number.

  • If an applicant is below 18, he/she enters the Citizen Application Number. 

4. Fill in the Passport & Travel Details (including Reason for Replacement) for the applicant. 

  •     The price depends on the e-passport category, plus the penalty of 50% of the initial payment. 

5. Attach all the required documents in the right format and size. 

6. Click on Next to process. 


7. Verify that the information is true, enter a phone number and/or email address, check the verification box, and click on Submit.

8. A billing number/ID (88….) will be generated for payment. You can then choose your preferred payment method. Click here to learn how to pay for a service. 

3. What to expect after submitting your application?

Step 1: Your application will be submitted to the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) for review.

Step 2: Once your application is approved, you will be notified when your passport is ready for pickup.

Note (for pick-up):

  • If you are in Kigali, go to the DGIE Headquarters.

  • If you are outside Kigali, visit the DGIE office at your district headquarters.

  • If you are outside Rwanda, visit the Rwandan Embassy in your country of residence.
