How to Apply for a Renewal of Resident ID Card

The resident ID is a form of local identification issued to foreigners living in Rwanda. This application requires the applicant to be 16 years old and above; he/she must have a passport and Rwandan Permit that is valid for longer than 6 months. You can only renew your ID if it has expired. The service is provided by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) office. 


The processing time is 5 days, and the price is RWF 5,000.


 Prerequisites: 

  • Applicants must be 16 years old and above.

  • Applicants can apply for this service with or without an Irembo account.

  • Applicants should have any travel document, such as a valid passport or laissez-passer, etc.

  • Applicants should have valid permits.

  • Applicants should have a passport and Rwandan permit valid for longer than 6 months.

  • The applicant should have an existing resident ID card number.

  • Applicants should have a valid phone number, email address, or both. 

Follow these simple steps to replace the resident ID card: 

  1. Visit www.irembo.gov.rw and under Immigration and Emigration, click on Foreign ID Card. 


  1. Select “Renewal of resident ID card” and click on Apply.

  1. Fill in the applicant details, travel document number, existing resident ID card, and place of collection, then click on Next to proceed.

  1. Verify that the information is true, enter a phone number and/or email address, check the verification box, and click on Submit.

  2. A billing number/ID (88….) will be generated for payment. Click Pay.

  3. Applicants choose the mode of payment. For more information about payment modes, click here.

NOTE: After applying and paying successfully via IremboGov, the applicant receives a feedback notification from the DGIE informing them to visit their office for further instructions about their application.
