This service is issued to Rwandans or foreigners legally residing in Rwanda to renew their expired CEPGL travel documents. The document is used to travel within the Economic Community of the Great Lakes Countries(CEPGL) member states which are Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The service is provided by the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) office. 


The following are the most frequently asked questions about foreigner identification card;

  1. How much do I pay for the renewal of CEPGL travel document?

Rwandan nationals pay Rwf 1000 or USD 1 while foreigners pay Rwf 10,000 or USD 10.

You can apply for this service with or without an Irembo account.

  1. What is the processing time for the renewal of CEPGL travel document?

The processing time of the renewal for the CEPGL travel document is 1 day.


  1. What are the requirements needed to apply for the renewal of CEPGL travel document?

  • Applicants should have a copy of the expired CEPGL travel document.

  • Rwandan applicants who are 16 years and above should have their national IDs.

  • Minors should have child IDs.

  • Minors with no document can still apply but will be required to fill in some extra information.

  • Foreigners should have their passports

  • Applicants should have a valid phone number, email address, or both.


  1. What is the size of attachments allowed to be uploaded on IremboGov?

The size of attachments allowed is: 

  • A photo with a white background (Format: JPG, Size: 500KB)

  • Copy of national ID or passport (Format: PDF, Size: 500KB) 

  • Signature (Format: JPG, Size: 500KB) 


  1. I damaged my CEPGL travel document. Do I apply for a renewal of CEPGL travel document?

No, you should apply for the replacement of the CEPGL travel document.


  1. What is the validity of the CEPGL travel document?

The validity is 6 months for Rwandan nationals and 3 months for foreign expatriate residents in Rwanda. 


  1. Can I download another payment receipt if the one I had is lost or damaged?

Yes, you can download the payment receipts as many times as possible.


  1. Where do  I get my CEPGL travel document once it is processed?

Once it is processed, you will pick up the hard copy at the DGIE office.
