Frequently Asked Questions about Identification Services

Identification services are services provided by the National Identification Agency (NIDA). The services include an application for a national ID for both Rwandans living in Rwanda and those living abroad, national ID correction, national ID replacement, and registration in the National Population Registry among others.

The following are the most frequently asked questions about identification services: 

What are the application fees of the application for national ID, national ID correction, and national ID replacement? 

The application fees for these services are: 

  • Application for national ID (both local and diaspora): Rwf 500

  • National ID correction: Rwf 1,500

  • National ID replacement: Rwf 1,500

What are the processing times of the application for national ID, national ID correction, and national ID replacement? 

The processing time for these services is 30 working days. 

Who is eligible to get a Rwandan national ID?

Any Rwandan who is above 16 years is eligible for this service. 

Where can I get a Child Application Number? 

A Child Application Number is acquired in two different ways: 

  1. For Rwandans living in Rwanda, a child born after the launch of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS), the Child Application Number is acquired from the hospital. And for citizens born before the launch of CRVS, it is acquired at the sector. 

  2. For Rwandans living abroad, after the approval of DGIE and NIDA, NIDA produces the Child Application Number, and Irembo sends that number to the applicant via email. Visit www.irembo.gov.rw and click on Application for a National ID for diaspora applicants without an NPR number to apply for the Child/Citizen Application Number only if you live abroad. 

Where do I get the Citizen/Child Application Number in case of loss?

What should I do when my Child Application Number is not reflected? 

The applicant shares the Child Application Number with NIDA or the IremboGov support team for assistance.

Do I apply for a national ID when I have lost my old one? 

No! In case of loss or damage, the applicant applies for a national ID replacement. Click here to find out how to apply for an ID replacement. 

I am a Rwandan living in Rwanda but I don’t have the Child Application Number. Can I apply for a national ID diaspora? 

No! The applicant first registers with the National Population Registry (NPR) to get the Child Application Number. Click here to find how to register with NPR. 

I applied for a national ID for diaspora and I received the biometric data capture notification. Can I go to the nearest embassy? 

Yes! When the applicant receives an appointment notification, they should visit the nearest embassy for further processing. 

I am a Rwandan who lives abroad but currently, I am in Rwanda for 3 weeks. I want to apply for a national ID. Where do I go to register in the National Population Registry? 

For Rwandans living abroad, when you are in Rwanda, you visit the NIDA headquarters to get registered in the National Population Registry and receive the Citizen/Child Application Number. 

I am a Rwandan living abroad and I want to apply for a national ID. Which service do I apply for?

You should apply for the “Application for a National ID for diaspora without an NPR number” service. Click here to find how to apply for a national ID as a diaspora. 

I want to change the gender on my ID. NIDA produced my ID with that mistake. Who do I contact for help?

The applicant applies for national ID correction via IremboGov and waits for the Civil Registration Officer’s appointment for further processing. 

Where do I get my ID once is it produced by NIDA after the ID replacement?

Once NIDA has approved your request for ID replacement, you can collect your ID at the place where it was first issued. 

I am a Rwandan living abroad with a Child Application Number. Can I apply for the “Application for a National ID for diaspora without an NPR number?”

No! This service is only applicable for applicants without a Child/Citizen Application Number.
